The coupon may be paid once or more in a year; if the coupon rate is higher than the yield it leads to a higher bond price. Yet if coupon rate is lower than the yield, it leads to a lower market price of a bond. The bond price equals it's maturity value when coupon rate is the same as yield on bond.
